Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study reveals that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
